Spotting deer in the New Forest isn't always easy, but at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary there is a purpose built viewing platform overlooking a large meadow area where a herd of fallow deer regularly gather.

Deer viewing at Bolderwood isn't guaranteed but the herd are fed daily by the local New Forest keeper, between the months of April and September, so the deer are more than happy to remain in the main meadow and are very accustomed to human presence. Feeding time can be between noon and 3pm.

Several of the animals are white, which is quite an uncommon colour for fallow deer to be. The platform provides an excellent photo opportunity although a zoom or telephoto lens is a very good idea, if you want close-up shots.

The large grass lawn at Bolderwood car parkThe wooden viewing platform is just a short distance from the main Bolderwood car park. Adjacent to the car park is a large flat grassy Forest lawn, perfect for kicking a football around or grouping up for a game of rounders! In fact, Bolderwood is one of the most popular spots in the New Forest for spending a sunny day and the area can become a bit congested during the better weather and holiday times.

While the deer sanctuary is the main attraction at Bolderwood, there are also graded walks and a large picnic area amongst the tall trees, alongside which is a New Forest information cabin (not always open) manned by a Forest Ranger. The picnic area also has decent toilet facilities.

If you don't want to stray too far from your vehicle, it's an ideal place to take a packed lunch and just enjoy the forest atmosphere.

Of course, if you want to see more of Bolderwood the graded walks take you through the surrounding woodland. Each one starts and ends at the picnic area and follow gravel tracks. There are three walks of 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2 miles and all are very easy going.

CLUECRYPTED

ClueCrypted is an exciting real life escape game designed for groups of 2 to 6 players. Based in New Milton in Hampshire ClueCrypted offers a personal escape room experience designed to test your mind and wits.

ESCAPE ROOMS

Locked in a room with just 60 minutes on the clock, your team must solve puzzles and work together to find the key to escape. The clues and their answers are all around you. Can you use your eyes, ears and mind to get out in time?

PHASE ONE - OUTBREAK

Deadly virus outbreaks have simultaneously broken out all over the world. Scientists at the Pandemic Avoidance Research Centre (PARC) have been working tirelessly hoping to find a cure.

With almost 80% of the worlds population infected, the virus is spreading unlike anything we have ever seen before.

PHASE TWO - CAPTURE

You have been captured by research scientists working for the PARC hoping to find a way to stop the spread of the virus. Regular antidote appears to be having no affect in eliminating the destructive and violent symptoms.

With still little idea how the virus is spreading from person to person, the scientists’ only hope is to perform tests on live human subjects.

PHASE THREE - ESCAPE

Two weeks have passed since your capture. The relentless screams from the room you can only see labelled as 'The Laboratory' made you quickly realise you need to escape.

There was an emergency at the other side of the building and the staff have gone. Will you make it out in time?

Come and discover this artillery fortress built by Henry VIII at the seaward end of a spit. Commanding the entrance to the Solent, it offers one of the best views in England.

It played a part in the imprisonment of Charles I in the 17th century and defended England from invasion threats in the 19th and 20th centuries. Exhibitions around the castle provide you with a chance to piece together Hurst Castle's history.

With an audio tour to help you navigate, fantastic views of the Isle of Wight from the top of the Tudor keep and plenty of open spaces for the children to explore, it's a great day out for the whole family. There's also a cafe offering homemade food.

Access to the castle is a leisurely ferry ride from Keyhaven (charges apply) or a 1.5 mile walk along Hurst Spit (please note this is a shingle spit). Cafe is open daily and dogs on leads welcome.

Open weekends only during winter months, weather permitting, 10.30am - 4.00pm. The Castle will not be open for Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Tel: 01590 642344

Boatyard facilities

As well as its first-class berthing and marina services, Hythe Marina Village has a boatyard within it for DIY maintenance work, using the various marine services on site, or getting help from our own professional, highly qualified team.

We can lift vessels up to 40 tons (if you need more, please check in advance), and we offer an emergency boat lifting facility.

There is storage ashore for over 120 boats and a slipway with ample space for trailer and car storage. Both petrol and diesel are available at cost to Freedom Berthing members.

24/7 Storage

We also offer secure and convenient storage facilities onsite. So if you need to stow boating gear, or you have business or household goods to store, click here to find out more.

Out and about

The marina entrance is controlled by lock gates, operated 24 hours a day throughout the year, and there is easy access to Southampton Water and several of our other marinas situated in and around the Solent. Hythe Pier, the Hythe Pier Railway and the Hythe Ferry provide a link between the English port city of Southampton and the Hampshire village of Hythe on the west side of Southampton Water.

The New Forest gained a new entrance with the Hythe Pier being sold as “a point of departure for the forest”. The route received Royal approval on August 13th 1888 when Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg accompanied by Princess Alice of Hesse stepped onto the pierhead from their yacht Elfin bound for a long circular tour.

Many famous people have used the pier, including King Alphonso XIII of Spain, and Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany.

King George VI rode the pier train prior to reviewing the embarking the D-day troops in 1944.

In 1887 Mr. James Percy, (so began the association of the Percy family with the pier and ferry), succeeded Mr. Fry who was lessee of the pier.

Mr. Percy was a direct descendent of Sir Henry Percy, first Earl of Northumberland and father of Harry, called HOTSPUR.

Hotspur became the name of the family’s ferryboat and four others have proudly followed – Hotspur IV still being used at the present time.

The village of Hythe nestles between the edge of the New Forest and Southampton Water, with its surrounding area known as ‘The Waterside’.

An ideal place to visit, Hythe with its waterfront, boasts fantastic views across Southampton Water, and especially of the majestic cruise liners which come into the Port most days.

The village centre with pretty Georgian High Street offers a good range of interesting shops and services, with ample parking and pleasant traffic-free precincts.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink to suit all budgets, or enjoy traditional fish and chips on the sea front Promenade, with its raised boardwalk.

Take a ride on the little electric train along Hythe’s historic Pier, which is over 130 years old, and catch the passenger ferry, which sails back and forth every half hour between Hythe and the city of Southampton.

Visit on a Tuesday to see Hythe’s market.

Hythe was the home of Sir Christopher Cockerell, the inventor of the Hovercraft. A memorial to his achievement can be found in shady waterfront gardens.

Leisurely stroll around Hythe’s Marina with its distinctive ‘fishing village’ style development and sit and watch the ships, yachts and boats out on the water.

Nature Reserve

Hampshire County Council purchased this beautiful area of coastline between 1973 and 2006 to protect its unique historical and wildlife heritage. The reserve covers nearly 200 Ha (500 acres) between the mouth of the Lymington river and the village of Keyhaven. The landscape we see today has been shaped by more than 2000 years of human activity. If you look carefully there are signs of a major industry which once thrived here.

The adjacent mudflats and salt marshes outside the seawall are leased by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and form their Keyhaven and Pennington Marshes Reserve. Together these two reserves ensure the protection of an extensive area of coastal habitat. Both reserves lie within the New Forest National Park, recognising their importance for both wildlife and people.

You can obtain good views of the marshes and their wildlife from the Solent Way which runs the length of the reserve. There are also several attractive circular walks on local footpaths which cross the area.

The reserve is open every day of the year for quiet informal recreation on designated paths and tracks.

Management of the reserve: Control of water levels, salinity and grazing are crucial. During the summer cattle and ponies from the New Forest graze the reserve. Grazing animals help control scrub and invasive species such as rush. Many of the specialist plants and insects depend on wet ditches and ponds being of the right salinity. A system of sluices and tidal flaps are used to control flooding and water flow around the reserve.

We’re passionate about wildlife and conservation at New Forest Wildlife Park and we want to encourage our visitors to learn more about conservation too.

Many of our animals, such as the giant otter, are on the IUCN endangered species Red List and we’re doing our best to help breed and conserve them for the future.

We were the first park in the UK to send a captive-bred giant otter to an international breeding programme abroad. Katuma, a young giant otter born at our sister park the Chestnut Centre in Derbyshire, was sent to Emperor Valley Zoo in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 2013 to meet his specially chosen mate, Suzie.

At New Forest Wildlife Park we work closely with all the regulatory authorities to make sure our animals receive the best care. Some of our animals, such as our European bison, may also be included in international captive breeding programmes in the future. These programmes are strictly controlled to ensure good breeding stocks are available for species under threat.

Other conservation projects include:

  • Rehabilitation of injured and orphaned native species - otters, owls, and deer Scottish wildcat captive breeding programme
  • Harvest mouse captive breeding programme
  • Pine marten captive breeding programme and studbook management European polecat captive breeding programme
  • Water vole captive breeding programme
  • Supporting Diane McTurk’s Giant Otter rehabilitation programme at Karanambu Ranch, Rupununi, Guyana
  • European bison captive breeding programme
  • Eurasian otter captive breeding programme
  • Managing a European studbook for the Asian short-clawed otter and pine marten
  • Donations to Nick Marx in Cambodia to help with his Wildlife Rescue Alliance and work with endangered hairy nosed otter

Rescue work

Behind the scenes we also work closely with the RSPCA, vets, the police and other organisations to help rescue injured and abandoned wild animals and bring them back to good health.

We have extensive expertise in working with Eurasian otters and so much of our rescue work involves orphaned and abandoned otter cubs that have been separated from their parents due to swollen rivers, accidents or other events.

The rescued cubs stay with us at New Forest Wildlife Park until they are 15 to 18 months old and after weaning they are kept away from human contact as much as possible so they can successfully be returned to the wild.

This work is not subsidised and costs us around £3000 in food and care for each animal. So by visiting our three wildlife parks, our supporters are helping us to carry out this vital conservation and rescue work.

Guests can soar high into the skies upon on The Flight of the Pterosaur, a mighty and unique suspended coaster, which takes family adventurers swooping high and low around a prehistoric landscape.

Only the bravest explorers will take on Velociraptor. Those who dare to board this breath-taking family boomerang coaster will sense the speed and agility of the Velociraptor as drops and sweeps around tight bends and through ancient tunnels.

Everyday there is an incredible opportunity to meet ‘living’ tame (ish) walking dinosaurs at Alive – Dinosaur Encounter.

Critter Creek is a world of strange mixed-up creatures known as the ‘Curious Critters’! Meet the Fly-ger or say hello to the Horned Swamp Donkey! At the centre of Little Africa is an impressive aviary where a mix of bird species such as the trumpeter hornbills and black-crowned night herons, will share the same environment that has been designed to replicate an African waterhole

Top for thrills is the Park’s breathtaking ride, EDGE. Riders swoop and spin through the air reaching a height of 15 metres on a giant disc that travels along a 90-metre track featuring a ‘camelback’ hill to create an amazing floating sensation. EDGE was the first ride of its type in the UK and perfectly complements the Park’s other thrilling rides including The Cobra and, last year’s exhilarating new attraction Magma. The largest of Paultons three rollercoasters, The Cobra features an exciting combination of twists, drops and turns that have made it a great family favourite whilst Magma launches riders 25 metres up in to the sky only to drop them back down in to the heart of a smoking volcano!

Smaller children will love Water Kingdom! It’s a whole world of water jets, giant tipping buckets, sprays, fountains, and super soakers for the little ones to enjoy and explore. This huge 8,500ft2 kids’ splash park paradise features more than 20 different ways of getting wet and has a seated patio area nearby so parents can relax whilst watching the fun.

Younger children also adore the beautiful garden-themed Trekking Tractors ride, Seal Falls and the Digger

Daily penguin feeding sessions also take place throughout the year, featuring an entertaining keeper talk which gives visitors a chance to learn more about these unusual and often humorous birds.

Paultons really is way too much fun for one day!

Further information including a calendar of opening times is available from paultonspark.co.uk

COVID-19

In response to the developing situation surrounding Coronavirus and the most recent advice from the UK Government we are very sorry to say Paultons Park will close from 5.00pm on Friday 20th March until further notice.

This is not a decision that has been made easily having already implemented many additional measures to protect both our guests, staff and suppliers. However, we now feel this is the only and correct course of action available to us in order to limit social interaction in line with the clear recommendations laid out by the Prime Minister.

Ringwood Brewery was founded by Peter Austin in 1978, a man who is revered as "the father of British Micro-brewing".

Ringwood Brewery's first brewhouse was in a former bakery in the old station yard brewing Best Bitter and Fortyniner for a handful of local customers. 1979 saw the production of Old Thumper, which has since become the flagship brew.

In 1986, having outgrown the Minty's yard premises, the brewery moved to its present site, ironically the location of the old Tunks' Brewery which ceased trading in 1821.

Today the brewery is able to produce circa 40,000 barrels of its renowned and distinctive beers. In addition to Best, Fortyniner, and Old Thumper, we now brew the blonde Boondoggle and the deliciously warming XXXX Porter.

Ringwood Brewery also boasts its own Brewery Store on site selling a full range of its beers as well as a wines, cider and souvenir merchandise. These goods including our bottled beers are available from our online shop. The Store welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The company's commitment to continuous improvement by investing in plant and equipment and training and development of staff has been recognised by a number of local and national business awards.

SS Shieldhall is a heritage steamship based at Berth 110 Berth in the Western Docks, Southampton.

“Shieldhall” is unique as a time capsule providing a working example of steamship machinery both above and below deck, typical of the cargo and passenger ships that plied the oceans of the world from the 1870s until the mid 1960s, by which time they were all but extinct.

The ship is of special interest as she is built on the classical lines of a 1920s steamer with a traditional wheelhouse; the hull is of riveted and welded construction and this unusual feature is representative of the transitional phase in British shipbuilding when welding took over from riveted practice. The hull has a slightly raked bow and cruiser stern. The teak decks and emergency steering position aft add to the classic effect. Shieldhall was effectively obsolete mechanically at the time of her launch having steam machinery representative of the late 19th century at a time when the diesel engine was coming into its own.

Now believed to be the largest working steam ship in Northern Europe, she is owned and operated entirely by voluntary effort.

Shieldhall offers a variety of trips across a May - September sailing season, including live music and special themed cruises. Hot and cold food is available on all trips, plus real ale and ice cream. An informed commentary offers an insight into the history of the Docks, pointing out the ill-fated Titanic Berth 44, and the sights and sounds of Southampton Water. A highlight of your visit will be the chance to discover Shieldhall's Engine and Boiler Rooms under steam, and the opportunity to meet the Captain on the Bridge.

When not cruising, Shieldhall is an ideal base for events - a popular way to celebrate birthdays and special occasions; company meetings and AGMs. Listed as 'No 1 Thing to Do in Southampton' on TripAdvisor, 2018-20.

Welcome

The Raft was born following the request from one or two individuals who were suffering terminal illnesses and had never managed to ‘meet’ a horse in their lives and were keen to do so. The resulting connections with an old, retired horse called Chloe were both moving and clearly beneficial. Thus there is potential for helping people from many walks of life to find restorative and nurturing support from connecting with horses and nature.

We all know that if only we could stop the world spinning, take time out and breathe the fresh air we would benefit from the break. It is hoped the Horse Raft will facilitate this. Even if only a few people join in; making friends with a horse or two while enjoying time and learning a bit about the New Forest, it will have succeeded in its aims.

The Horse Raft CIC is Community Interest Company which is a legal form of social enterprise and a not-for-profit organisation.

William the Conqueror set aside the Forest for hunting more than 900 years ago as his 'Nova Foresta' or 'New Forest' and centuries of grazing by deer, ponies and cattle have shaped the landscape.

William would probably still recognise much of the Forest as the same place he hunted wild deer and boar. Today it is a wonderful area to explore by walking, cycling and on horseback. Enjoy your visit and please help to keep the New Forest National Park a special place.

Southampton’s most important historic building, Tudor House reveals over 800 years of history in one fascinating location at the heart of the Old Town. The timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from Tudor House Garden, dating back a further 300 years. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years, and of Southampton itself. It appeals to visitors of all ages and interests, who find the family-friendly activities, interactive technology and fascinating displays a winning combination.

Café

Tudor House Café overlooks the delightful Tudor Knot Garden. It serves a delicious range of refreshments all day, from fresh coffee and biscuits to tea and fabulous cakes. Most of our range is sourced locally, using the finest ingredients. The café is a perfect location for your freshly made lunchtime sandwich, snack or that sweet treat. We offer children’s sized portions and high chairs for younger visitors.

The Café roof is of particular interest, being green … literally. It has a sedum and wildflower roof, which assists insulation and is also enjoyed by the bees. You can enjoy the Tudor House Café without needing to pay for admission to the rest of the building, so give it a try for your next lunch date or business rendezvous. The downstairs Georgian Room overlooking the garden, is available for corporate hire for meetings or training sessions on weekdays (Tues-Fri). Our Café can also cater for working lunches.

Shop

Tudor House shop is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir of your visit or a special gift for family or friends. We have a lovely range of quality Tudor and Victorian inspired gifts and books as well as lots of interesting and reasonably priced souvenirs and treats suitable for children with a little pocket money to spend. You’ll love our range of tapestry items and ‘pocket’ garden herbs and flowers. You may also be tempted by our delicious range of liqueurs and preserves, or just want to pick up one of our unique postcards so you can write and tell your family and friends what a great time you had at Tudor House.
